The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) released today a legal paper detailing the suffering of a lawyer in the corridors of the  State Security Prosecution and the undermining of his and defendants rights in actual practice in violation of the law and the Constitution.

The paper, entitled “A story of a lawyer and a defendant in the State Security Prosecution”, gives a detailed account of a day in a lawyer’s life that is full of suffering from the moment he arrives at the State Security Prosecution’s headquarters, starting from his attempt to enter the prosecution’s building, till his efforts to be informed with decisions after an investigation or a detention renewal session.  The paper also outlined the list of things that are prohibited and forbidden among lawyers, before and during investigations while attending with their clients, including things that are restricted in contravention of the law.

Additionally, the paper briefly narrated the suffering experienced by defendants inside the same building of the “State Security Prosecution”, and its inaction towards the wasting of detainees’ rights which are guaranteed and clearly prescribed by the Constitution and the law, as if the matter is: rights guaranteed by law, wasted in the actual reality and in practice.

Despite the habitual disregard for human rights reports condemning violations of the law, ANHRI introduces some simple recommendations, both for the Public Prosecutor and the Lawyers’ Syndicate. We hope such recommendations can be put into action, if there is a political will to reduce the arbitrariness and violations committed on an almost daily basis, either against lawyers working in freedoms-related cases or defendants involved in political cases.
