Cairo, 8 May 2019,

The Program of freedom of expression of workers and social movements published today the Labor and Social Protest Index for April under the title “Waiting and Anticipation”.

The program said: “We can call April a month of waiting and anticipation, where the protest index indicated a decline in the number of protests, with the increase of the oppressive measures and the declaration of a state of emergency in the country for a period of 3 months, as well as the approval by Parliament of the constitutional amendments that make all room to the rule of one person; current president who has been also given additional years in office.

Workers and employees are waiting for the fulfillment of the promises made by the President of the Republic to increase salaries and grant a bonus to balance the effects of inflation as of the first of next July.

The program monitored 27 protests during April, including 18 social protests, as well as 9 labor and professional protests.

Regarding labor and professional protests, the program monitored;

– 3 cases of strike.

– 3 sit-ins

– 3 protest

 In terms of social protests, the program was monitored;

– 7 cases of suicide or attempted suicide

– 5 gatherings

– 2 protest vigils,

Along with other protest methods that the program addressed

In regards to the geographical distribution;

Though Cairo has been at the top of the governorates in terms of number of labor and professional protests in the past few months, this month it was topped by both Giza and Sharqia, while Qalubia has competed with Cairo in terms of of social protests.

As for the sectorial distribution;

The sectors of the press, media and publishing were at most regarding labor and professional protests, together with chemical industries, while the security sector was at top of the list of sectors in the social protests.
