The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) announced today the release of its report “The State of the Democratic Path in Egypt” monitoring the third quarter of the year 2019. The report details the proceedings and cases that affect the democratic path in Egypt during the months of July, August and September of 2019.

The report monitors the protests that took place in Egypt during the aforementioned period, alongside: the trials of various political forces and their affiliates, judicial decisions, military trials of civilians, death sentences in public opinion-related cases and assaults on human rights defenders and media freedoms.

ANHRI said: “The security forces’ use of repression as a means to deal with the demonstrations broke out on September 20, in protest against the deterioration of economic conditions and the waste of state funds on the establishment of presidential palaces, emphasizes that such repressive policies adopted by the state would flare up the protests further making them increase in scale, rather than spreading fear which state bodies have bet on.”

ANHRI called on the Egyptian authorities to release all prisoners of conscience as well as those arrested in connection with Protests 20 incidents. It also demanded to open a serious investigation into the reasons behind the growing outrage and the escalating protests, and to disclose its results.

According to the report, the third quarter of 2019 has witnessed; 7 military trials for 1,220 civilians and 6 death sentences against 26 defendants, including 9 whose executions have been upheld by the Court of Cassation. The social and labor protests have occupied the foreground of protest events organized during the reporting period by 46 protests out of 125, this is in addition to 42 cases of violations against media freedoms.
