Cairo: 10 December 2019

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) released today its annual report on the situation of Human Rights Defenders in Egypt during the year of 2019. The report, entitled “More than hard”, covers the period from 11 December 2018 to 10 December 2019.

The report reveals numerous violations that have been committed against dozens of human rights defenders, including: convictions, pretrial detention under no serious charges, ongoing travel bans, and media smear campaigns which have amounted to incitement to murder.

The report also monitors cases of torture and physical assaults in addition to enforced disappearances and illegal detention. It doesn’t neglect to highlight the international awards given to human rights defenders this year despite the difficult situation which they work in.

ANHRI issues its report today to commemorate the Human Rights Day; as it points out some documented and chronically-listed details of the violations endured by human rights defenders throughout 2019. Such violations have reached over 200 cases approaching the end of this year, giving a clear manifestation of the hard situations and conditions experienced by human rights defenders, under a regime that became accustomed to the violations and infringement of rights in endemic disregard for the rule of law.
