Cairo: July 10, 2018
The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) today released its report monitoring the democratic path during the second quarter of 2018, which was issued by Lawyers for Democracy initiative. The report addresses the state of democracy in Egypt during the months of April, May and June.
The report covers the protests that took place in Egypt during the aforementioned period, alongside: the trials of various political forces and its members, the judicial decisions, the military trials of civilians, the death sentences in cases related to public opinion and the assault against human rights defenders and media freedoms.
The report observed the following:
- One death sentence by a military court, and two others by a criminal court, against 46 defendants.
- 108 different protest events, topped by the social protests with 64 events
- 27 attacks on media freedoms.
- Military trials for 1155 civilians
- The continued targeting of human rights defenders.
ANHRI said “After dubious elections, President Sisi started his second term the same way he ended the first one, without any significant change. The Egyptian authorities are still insisting on the full closure of the public sphere and the elimination of political life. All opinion holders and human rights defenders became targets for the security bodies; the right to collective expression of opinion is still being confiscated, and the same philosophy of legislation that is based on the restriction of freedoms continues to exist.”
