Cairo: October, 2018
The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) today released its report monitoring the democratic path during the third quarter of 2018, which was issued by Lawyers for Democracy initiative. The report addresses the status of democracy in Egypt during the months of July, August and September.
The report covers the protests that took place in Egypt during the aforementioned period, alongside: trials of various political forces and their affiliates, judicial decisions, military trials of civilians, death sentences in public opinion cases and assaults on human rights defenders and media freedoms.
The report monitors the following:
- Seven death sentences by criminal courts against 119 defendants.
- 106 different protest events, topped by social protests with 75 events
- 23 attacks on media freedoms.
- Military trials against 864 civilians
- The ongoing targeting of human rights defenders.
ANHRI said, “In continuation of the attack on freedom of expression and media freedoms, the state has nationalized press institutions and placed a number of newspapers and news sites- including “Al- Mesryoon” and Al-Borsa News newspapers- at the disposal of governmental Akhbar El Yom Foundation. The move came after a temporary judge issued a decision to confiscate and seize property of more than 1800 citizens.”
ANHRI added, “The reporting period has seen an increase in death sentences compared to the second quarter report; as Egyptian courts sentenced 119 defendants to death over a number of political cases, 20 of whom are awaiting the President’s ratification of the verdict so that it would be implemented after the appeal they filed have been turned down.”
