A new report by ANHRI about some record numbers of human rights violations

Cairo: 20 November 2019

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) released today a brief report on the record-breaking numbers of human rights violations in Egypt which are not addressed by the Egyptian media, some of which have broken records that the country hasn’t witnessed before.

ANHRI’s report, entitled “Unmentioned Achievements…Some record numbers of Egypt’s human rights violations“, is limited to seven record numbers that have been achieved by the current regime since the overthrow of former President Mohamed Morsi. This includes:

– The killing of a record number of protesters in one day, in what is known as the dispersal of Raba’a El-Adawyia Sit-in

– The death sentences handed down against hundreds of defendants involved in one case

– The number of political detainees

-The number of journalists and media professionals detained during this time

-The number of websites blocked in Egypt

-The number of people held in pretrial detention

-The prolonged pretrial detention periods in total disregard of the Constitution and the law

ANHRI said, “These are just illustrative examples of some record-breaking numbers of human rights violations and are not meant to be exhaustive; as blatant violations are countless. We introduce them to the media even though we believe it is aware of such violations but don’t dare to address them for fear of imprisonment or at least deprivation of work. However, the fact that these violations are not being mentioned or covered in the media doesn’t mean that they don’t exist. They do exist and the media is aware of them, and remaining silent on these human rights violations constitutes an act of collusion against Egyptians’ rights”.
