{"id":26845,"date":"2021-10-12T14:14:29","date_gmt":"2021-10-12T14:14:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.anhri.info\/?p=26845"},"modified":"2021-10-12T14:14:29","modified_gmt":"2021-10-12T14:14:29","slug":"shutting-minds-and-silencing-the-future-what-the-dubai-expo-really-covers-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.anhri.info\/?p=26845&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Shutting minds and silencing the future: what the Dubai Expo really covers up"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article__description\">\n<p>(Geneva\/Beirut) <strong>\u2014<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>From\u00a01 October 2021 to March 2022, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will host the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expo2020dubai.com\/\">Dubai Expo<\/a>, the first World Expo to be held in the Arab World.\u00a0Two dozen human rights partners* led by the\u00a0Gulf Centre for Human Rights (GCHR)\u00a0are launching a campaign and holding an event on 14 October (See:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alternativehrexpo.org\/\">alternativehrexpo.org<\/a>) to counter the narrative of \u201ctolerance\u201d and \u201copenness\u201d that the UAE claims to uphold and aims to feature at the Dubai Expo, and highlight the ongoing repression in the country and the region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong><em>The UAE\u00a0claims that when the world comes together, we create a better tomorrow,<\/em>\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Khalid Ibrahim<\/strong>, Executive Director of GCHR. \u201c<em>But coming together to hear diverse voices and create a better world isn\u2019t possible when you lock up people for speaking their minds.\u00a0<\/em><em>In the UAE, every single human rights defender has been exiled or imprisoned in violation of their right to freedom of expression. Not one of them has been invited to the Dubai Expo,<\/em>\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0campaign\u00a0calls for the release of human rights defenders\u00a0<strong>Ahmed Mansoor,\u00a0<\/strong>Dr.<strong>\u00a0Nasser Bin Gaith<\/strong>, and three members of the group of prisoners known as the UAE94: Dr.\u00a0<strong>Mohammed Al-Roken,\u00a0<\/strong>Dr.<strong>\u00a0Mohammed Al-Mansoori<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Mohammed Abdul Razzaq Al-Siddiq<\/strong>. On 30 September 2021, 80 NGOs signed a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/alternativehrexpo.org\/\">joint letter<\/a>\u00a0calling for their release. The public is also asked to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/secure.avaaz.org\/community_petitions\/en\/sheikh_khalifa_bin_zayed_al_nahyan_free_human_rights_activists_during_dubai_expo\/\">sign a petition<\/a>\u00a0initiated by the International Campaign for Freedom in the UAE\u00a0\u00a0(ICFUAE).<\/p>\n<p>On 16 September 2021, the EU Parliament adopted an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/TA-9-2021-0390_EN.html\">\u00a0urgent resolution<\/a>\u00a0recognising the systematic persecution of human rights defenders in the UAE and calling for the UAE to release the prisoners mentioned above, stop the harassment of and immediately lift the travel ban against human rights defenders and guarantee they are able to carry out their human rights activities. This situation has been largely documented by numerous NGOs and UN human rights experts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong><em>The Dubai Expo is a perfect example of how the UAE uses its vast wealth to show beautiful things while they hide the total lack of freedom in the country. I was lucky to be out of the country or I would be with most of the other UAE 94 who have been in prison since 2012. They have now designated me as a terrorist. But for them anyone opposed to them is a terrorist,\u201d<\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alshamsi789?lang=it\"><strong>Hamad Mohammed Al-Shamsi<\/strong><\/a>, President of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.edacrights.com\/Search\/EDAC\">Emirates Detainees Advocacy Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this international criticism and as the only candidate for the MENA region, the UAE will almost certainly be selected by the United Nations General Assembly to join the UN Human Rights Council for a three-year term. The election is scheduled on 14 October 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>The fact that the UAE will ultimately get elected is outrageous. Membership of the UN\u2019s main human rights body should be reserved to States that don\u2019t criminalise, detain and torture those who seek to provide information on the human rights situation in their country. We are calling on all UN States to not vote on this or any\u00a0candidate that does not uphold the highest human rights standards. His wife and four sons live in the UAE. Mansoor\u2019s poetry will be featured at the Alternative Human Rights Expo.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Dr.<a href=\"http:\/\/icfuae.org.uk\/press-releases\/prisoner-conscience-dr-nasser-bin-ghaith-sentenced-3-years-ago\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/icfuae.org.uk\/press-releases\/prisoner-conscience-dr-nasser-bin-ghaith-sentenced-3-years-ago\"><strong>Nasser Bin Ghaith<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0an academic and lecturer at the Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, who was\u00a0\u00a0arrested on 18 August 2015 following his online protests about being tortured during a previous detention in 2011. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison on 29 March 2017 after prolonged pre-trial detention.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u25cf\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Human rights lawyer\u00a0Dr.<strong>\u00a0Mohammed Al-Roken, human rights lawyer\u00a0<\/strong>Dr.<strong>\u00a0Mohammed Al-Mansoori\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Sheikh Mohammed Abdul Razzaq Al-Siddiq,\u00a0all members of a group of prisoners known as the\u00a0UAE94<\/strong>, who were sentenced on 02 July 2013 to 10 years in prison for their online activities calling for democratic reform.
