Recalling Haitham Mohammadein standing amid dozens of workers in a conference held in <\/span><\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Journalist<\/span><\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span><\/span> Syndicate, chanting: \u201cstriking is a <\/span><\/span><\/span>legitimate <\/span><\/span><\/span>right .. against hunger and poverty.\u201d Another demonstration calling for the <\/span><\/span><\/span>release <\/span><\/span><\/span>of <\/span><\/span><\/span>someone who got<\/span><\/span><\/span> arrested and a third one defending \u201cTiran and Sanafir\u201d islands. From social to workers to political demonstrations, Mohammadein <\/span><\/span><\/span>hasn\u2019t stopped for years even<\/span><\/span><\/span> to take <\/span><\/span><\/span>a breath. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

An activist <\/span><\/span><\/span>who<\/span><\/span><\/span> defends workers\u2019 rights, one of the 25<\/span><\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span> of January 2011 revolution <\/span><\/span><\/span>activists<\/span><\/span><\/span>, an opponent to the <\/span><\/span><\/span>regime of former<\/span><\/span><\/span> president Mohammed Morsi and <\/span><\/span><\/span>he <\/span><\/span><\/span>witnessed the 6<\/span><\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span> April 2008 uprising under the rule of oust<\/span><\/span><\/span>ed<\/span><\/span><\/span> president Mohammed Hosni Mubarak. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Born in 1982, Haitham studied law, and he is the son Fawzi Mohammadein, a workers’ leader who participated in the Iron and Ste<\/span><\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span><\/span>l Factory <\/span><\/span><\/span>workers\u2019 strike <\/span><\/span><\/span>in 1989, in addition to his role as a political and workers\u2019 <\/span><\/span><\/span>rights<\/span><\/span><\/span> activist. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mohammadein participated in launching what is called \u201cThe Revolution Route Front\/ Revolutionaries\u201d after the incidents of the 3<\/span><\/span><\/span>rd<\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span> of July 2013, as an attempt to create a third road, but the movement did not last long in its message because of the severe<\/span><\/span><\/span>ly<\/span><\/span><\/span> oppressive<\/span><\/span><\/span> security circumstances. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mohammadein continued to be one of the most prominent leader<\/span><\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span><\/span> of the Revolutionary <\/span><\/span><\/span>Socialist<\/span><\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span><\/span> movement, strongly <\/span><\/span><\/span>present in<\/span><\/span><\/span> the major political <\/span><\/span><\/span>events<\/span><\/span><\/span>, especially, in the case of <\/span><\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span><\/span>transfer <\/span><\/span><\/span>of sovereignty over <\/span><\/span><\/span>the two islands \u201cTiran and Sanafir\u201d to Saudi Arabia, according to the <\/span><\/span><\/span>maritime border <\/span><\/span><\/span>demarcation agreement signed in April 2016. As he participated in founding what is known as \u201cThe <\/span><\/span><\/span>popular<\/span><\/span><\/span> campaign to defend the land\u201d. He asserted frequently that Israel is the main beneficiary of such an agreement, adding that the existence of Saudi <\/span><\/span><\/span>troops <\/span><\/span><\/span>on the islands turns them into occupied <\/span><\/span><\/span>territories<\/span><\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This <\/span><\/span><\/span>was<\/span><\/span><\/span> not the first in which <\/span><\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span><\/span>security forces arrest<\/span><\/span><\/span>ed<\/span><\/span><\/span> Haitham Mohammadein, he was arrested <\/span><\/span><\/span>on<\/span><\/span><\/span> the 25<\/span><\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span> of January 2011 from a <\/span><\/span><\/span>demonstration that began<\/span><\/span><\/span> from Shubra district in Cairo, with a group of youth, they were released before ‘Friday of Anger’ <\/span><\/span><\/span>on<\/span><\/span><\/span> the 28<\/span><\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span> of January 2011. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He was also arrested because of his political stance<\/span><\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span><\/span>, as the Military forces arrested him in a checkpoint in Suez <\/span><\/span><\/span>in <\/span><\/span><\/span>September 2013, while he was <\/span><\/span><\/span>on his way<\/span><\/span><\/span> to <\/span><\/span><\/span>support<\/span><\/span><\/span> The cement factory workers’ strike. He was detained in Ataka police station in Suez, and appeared <\/span><\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span><\/span>day <\/span><\/span><\/span>after <\/span><\/span><\/span>before <\/span><\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span><\/span>prosecution <\/span><\/span><\/span>accused <\/span><\/span><\/span>of \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>A<\/span><\/span><\/span>ssaulting a military officer <\/span><\/span><\/span>on duty<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span> and<\/span><\/span><\/span> he was released 48 hours later. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It seems that his frank rejection <\/span><\/span><\/span>of the <\/span><\/span><\/span>oust<\/span><\/span><\/span>ing of<\/span><\/span><\/span> former president Mohammed Morsi <\/span><\/span><\/span>on<\/span><\/span><\/span> the 3<\/span><\/span><\/span>rd<\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span> of July 2013, considering what happened as a military coup, <\/span><\/span><\/span>made him <\/span><\/span><\/span>an enemy <\/span><\/span><\/span>in the eyes of <\/span><\/span><\/span>the Egyptian authorities in <\/span><\/span><\/span>several ways<\/span><\/span><\/span>. In January 2015, the committee of Muslim Brotherhood funds inventory, under the supervision of <\/span><\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Ministry <\/span><\/span><\/span>of Justice<\/span><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/span>decided <\/span><\/span><\/span>to <\/span><\/span><\/span>freeze the assets <\/span><\/span><\/span>of 112 persons, among them two <\/span><\/span><\/span>Revolutionary <\/span><\/span><\/span>Socialist<\/span><\/span><\/span>s\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/span> members: <\/span><\/span><\/span>Haitham Mohammadein and Hesham Abdul Rassoul, and <\/span><\/span><\/span>some <\/span><\/span><\/span>young people who belonged to different political streams. The decree included the <\/span><\/span><\/span>freezing <\/span><\/span><\/span>of all real estate, liquid, movable, bank accounts, deposits, <\/span><\/span><\/span>safe deposit boxes<\/span><\/span><\/span> and savings registered under their names <\/span><\/span><\/span>in all banks<\/span><\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mohammadein commented on this decision saying: \u201cthe anchor who <\/span><\/span><\/span>read<\/span><\/span><\/span> the news <\/span><\/span><\/span>about freezing my assets <\/span><\/span><\/span>said: \u2018Haitham Mohammadein <\/span><\/span><\/span>doesn\u2019t have 5 EGP in his pocket<\/span><\/span><\/span>.. <\/span><\/span><\/span>What are you going to do about him?\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/span>… <\/span><\/span><\/span>W<\/span><\/span><\/span>hat a scandal!! <\/span><\/span><\/span>they are going to freeze <\/span><\/span><\/span>my non-existing funds\u201d. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Security forces arrested him in April 2016, <\/span><\/span><\/span>against<\/span><\/span><\/span> the back<\/span><\/span><\/span>drop<\/span><\/span><\/span> of protesting against <\/span><\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span><\/span>transfer <\/span><\/span><\/span>of sovereignty <\/span><\/span><\/span>o<\/span><\/span><\/span>ver<\/span><\/span><\/span> the two islands <\/span><\/span><\/span>of <\/span><\/span><\/span>Tiran and Sanafir to Saudi Arabia. <\/span><\/span><\/span>The p<\/span><\/span><\/span>rosecution <\/span><\/span><\/span>charged him with <\/span><\/span><\/span>inciting to demonstrate and joining a terrorist group, but he was <\/span><\/span><\/span>subsequently <\/span><\/span><\/span>released. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mohammadein participated with the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information in issuing a guidebook for <\/span><\/span><\/span>detainees<\/span><\/span><\/span> called <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>Make Yourself at Prison<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d. The guidebook was presented by media figure Yousri Fouda. It consis<\/span><\/span><\/span>ts<\/span><\/span><\/span> of four parts about <\/span><\/span><\/span>the various <\/span><\/span><\/span>circumstances that detaine<\/span><\/span><\/span>es<\/span><\/span><\/span> undergo: stopping and arrest, investigati<\/span><\/span><\/span>ons<\/span><\/span><\/span> in<\/span><\/span><\/span>side<\/span><\/span><\/span> police station<\/span><\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span><\/span>public prosecution, the nature of detention rooms in police stations and how to deal with it, and finally prisons and how to deal with it during <\/span><\/span><\/span>pretrial detention or<\/span><\/span><\/span> after <\/span><\/span><\/span>being handed down a <\/span><\/span><\/span>freedom-depriving <\/span><\/span><\/span>conviction, and <\/span><\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span><\/span>needs of prisoner<\/span><\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span><\/span>, along with general advice, <\/span><\/span><\/span>in addition to two <\/span><\/span><\/span>testimonies <\/span><\/span><\/span>from<\/span><\/span><\/span> former prisoners <\/span><\/span><\/span>of conscience<\/span><\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On <\/span><\/span><\/span>Friday, May <\/span><\/span><\/span>18, <\/span><\/span><\/span>2018, <\/span><\/span><\/span>at dawn, <\/span><\/span><\/span>security forces arrest<\/span><\/span><\/span>ed<\/span><\/span><\/span> lawyer and political activist Haitham Mohammadein from his house in Al Saf city, <\/span><\/span><\/span>in <\/span><\/span><\/span>Giza, and <\/span><\/span><\/span>took<\/span><\/span><\/span> him to an unknown <\/span><\/span><\/span>location<\/span><\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Next day he appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution, he was accused of participating <\/span><\/span><\/span>with<\/span><\/span><\/span> a group founded contrary to the provisions <\/span><\/span><\/span>of the <\/span><\/span><\/span>law aiming to prevent state institutions from performing <\/span><\/span><\/span>their duty<\/span><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/span>gathering<\/span><\/span><\/span> in a way that violates security and public peace and resisting <\/span><\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span><\/span>authorities. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Supreme State Security Prosecution decided to detain him for 15 days <\/span><\/span>pending<\/span><\/span> investigation<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span> into<\/span><\/span> \u201cprotesting against <\/span><\/span>the increase of<\/span><\/span> the underground tickets\u2019 prices\u201d and <\/span><\/span>he was added <\/span><\/span>to case no. 718 <\/span><\/span>of <\/span><\/span>2018 <\/span><\/span>along<\/span><\/span> with <\/span><\/span>an<\/span><\/span>other twenty defendants. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
